Project Portfolio
The project portfolio for Kilimo Trust is diverse and innovative, and comprises 23 projects spread across East Africa. We award grants to public and private organizations to undertake projects that support small holder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to become key players and beneficiaries in the development of local, national and regional markets for staple foods, livestock products and high value crops. We support development of innovative technologies, policies and institutions that create favorable conditions for improving efficiency along value chains.  Within our project portfolio, we also promote and facilitate innovate ways of improving adoption and scaling up outcomes from supported projects.

Our portfolio of projects comprises four categories of projects, designed to feed on each other. That is category I projects feed into the development of category II projects and so on. This helps to ensure that projects that eventually receive substantial funding have a high chance of success. This also maintains a pipeline of projects that are of different stages of development.

  • Category I Projects
    Commissioned Strategic Studies
Strategic Studies are usually undertaken in collaboration with outstanding institutions in the region. They are designed to provide evidence and knowledge in response to stakeholders demand to support policy dialogue and strategic plans.
  • Category II Projects
Kilimo trust looks for innovative ways to venture into new geographic areas, new technical/business issues or engages with new institutions with a potential to reduce poverty and increase income among communities. Such new knowledge emerges from priority issues identified in strategic studies and/or evaluations of ongoing projects funded by the trust or partner organizations.
  • Category III - Business Incubation Projects
These projects facilitate innovation and business development and are designed to support the commercialisation of ideas already proven by research or pilot project. Supported projects focus on innovations in policy, institutions and business practices.
