Vision and Mission PDF Print E-mail

Vision a broad-based wealth in East Africa through agriculture and agri-business development.

Mission is to expand market-led sustainable agriculture for development in the region.

Themes
Our strategy for achieving our mission is to focus on six priority themes where we believe our skills and experience can make a significant difference.

Promote efficient value chains
We support ways of linking food producers and other agro-entrepreneurs with local, national, and regional markets.  Success here can then lead to EAC engaging in international markets. We support increased understanding of markets, and the development of products and marketing logistics that are most attractive to producers and other agro-entrepreneurs.

Support technical and institutional innovations
We nurture ‘smart innovative systems’ that increase stakeholders’ ability to prospect for knowledge and put it into practice in order to remove technological and institutional barriers along key value chains.

Engage the private sector
We help to remove constraints that limit the exploitation of business opportunities and increase the success rate of investments in agricultural enterprises.  We do this by investing in facilitating private-public partnerships. We are already a partner in the African Agricultural Capital (AAC).  We also provide grants directly to private businesses and disseminate the commercial experiences gained from this to support other interested parties.

Facilitate policy dialogue
We support evidence-based dialogue and the development of policies relevant to market-led agriculture development.  We recognize that many policy decisions are political and so we will publicize our evidence as widely as possible. To do this we support strategic studies and help to disseminate their findings.

Create economies of scale in production systems
We support producers’ organizations to effectively engage in value chains.  This includes the development and use of innovative institutional structures, such as bulking quality produce by smallholder producers, contract farming, warehouse receipt systems, and primary processing and packaging to add value.  We also support better ways of linking producers with input suppliers, finance institutions, traders, transport service providers, and processors.

Mainstream environmental sustainability
We support innovations that lead to sustainable natural resources management in ways that empower producers and other agro-entrepreneurs to effectively respond to market opportunities.  These include support to beneficial conservation leading to non-extractive products and environmental services, such as clean water and carbon credits.
